Common problems

Signs Your AC Needs Repair

AC repair is the diagnosis and fixing of central air conditioning that isn't cooling, blows warm air, short cycles or won't turn on. Some quotes point toward replacement instead, and the repair or replace guide covers that decision.

Phoenix systems work harder than almost anywhere. The city has logged long runs of days at or above 100°F.

Warm air or weak cooling

If vents push out warm air or airflow feels thin, the system is running but not doing its job. The order of checks is in why your AC is blowing warm air.

Water around the indoor unit

Water near the air handler usually means the condensate drain isn't doing its job. Clogged or sun-exposed drain piping is covered in AC leaking water.

Short cycling or no start

A system that switches on and off every few minutes, or doesn't start at all, is under strain. See AC short cycling and AC won't turn on.

How serious is it

  1. Level 1 of 3: Early

Signs Weak airflow or warm air from vents

What to do Run the basic checks, then book a repair

  2. Level 2 of 3: Developing

Signs Water around the indoor unit

What to do Check the condensate drain and call a technician

  3. Level 3 of 3: Urgent

Signs Short cycling or no start

What to do Stop running it and call for repair

Sound familiar? The house is warm, you reset the thermostat and flipped the breaker. It cooled for an hour. Now it's worse, and the part that failed has stressed others.

Waiting costs more than acting. A small fault that runs through a Scottsdale summer can turn into a major component failure.

In Phoenix summer heat, a house with no cooling gets dangerous quickly for young children, older adults and anyone with a medical condition.

If someone vulnerable is at home, treat it as urgent. The heat wave checklist covers what to do first, and emergency 24-hour AC repair covers after-hours help.

What it costs

What Drives the Cost of AC Repair in Phoenix

The final bill depends on four things: the diagnostic fee, which part failed, whether the visit is after hours, and the age of the system.

Price factors

What moves the price of an AC repair

  • Diagnostic fee

Most companies list $89 to $99, and some waive or credit it if you approve the repair

  • Part that failed

Minor repairs run $150–$500, while major components run $1,000–$3,000+

  • After-hours visit

Emergency common failures run $250 to $1,200

  • System age

Older systems are more likely to need major component or refrigerant-related work

The full breakdown is in AC repair cost in Phoenix.

The figures below come from Phoenix-area HVAC companies' own websites, checked October 2026. They are general guidance, not quotes.

Diagnostic fee

Range
Most companies list $89 to $99
Full spread $59 to $139
Middle value $89

Several listings say the fee is waived or credited when you approve the repair. A consumer guide puts typical fees at $75 to $150.[2]

Repair price ranges

Type of repair Range printed on company sites
General AC repair $89-$500
Residential AC repair $150 to $750
Broader AC repair range $150 to $1,500
Minor repair / service call $150–$500
Capacitor or contactor repair $200–$600
Emergency common failures $250 to $1,200
Refrigerant-related work $400–$1,200+
Major component repair $1,000–$3,000+

One consumer guide says Phoenix homeowners can expect to pay between $150 and $900 for HVAC repairs.[2]

Ask for an itemized written quote before any work starts.

Pro tip

Ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you approve the work, since several listings say it is.

What to expect

What Happens During an AC Repair Visit

A good visit follows a set order. Knowing it helps you spot a contractor who skips steps.

Step by step

How an AC repair visit runs

  1. Booking and symptoms

You describe what the system does and when it began.

  2. Inspection and diagnosis

The technician finds the failed part or parts.

  3. Written quote

The quote states the repair, the cost and the license number.

  4. Repair and testing

The part is fixed or replaced, then the system is run to confirm it cools.

  5. Explanation and paperwork

You get a plain account of the work, plus the invoice.

  1. Booking and symptoms. Describe what the system does: warm air, short cycles, water, no start. Mention when it began.
  2. Inspection and diagnosis. The technician checks the system and finds the failed part or parts.
  3. Written quote before work. The quote should state the repair, the cost and the contractor's license number. Per ROC hiring advice, a written contract should also carry start and completion dates.
  4. Repair and testing. The part is fixed or replaced, then the system is run to confirm it cools.
  5. Final explanation and paperwork. You get a plain account of what failed and what was done, plus the invoice.

Permits depend on your city

Phoenix says repair or replacement of an existing AC needs no permit unless the work increases unit size, capacity or location. Mesa, Scottsdale and unincorporated Maricopa County each handle like-for-like work differently.

Ask the contractor which rule applies, and read does replacing your AC need a permit for more.

Credentials worth asking about

These are helpful signals, not requirements:

  • NATE certification for individual technicians
  • ACCA Quality Assured accreditation for companies
  • EPA Section 608 certification for technicians who handle refrigerants
  • Manufacturer dealer programs

What HVAC credentials mean explains each one.

Choosing a company

How to Verify an Arizona ROC License Before You Hire

The Arizona Registrar of Contractors licenses HVAC contractors. Cities handle permits, not trade licenses.

  1. Search the contractor in the ROC Contractor Search, via the ROC website.
  2. Confirm the license is active.
  3. Confirm the license class covers the work in your contract.
  4. Call the number on the ROC record.
  5. Make checks payable to the company named in the contract.

Which class to look for

HVAC work needs an R-39, R-39R or CR-39 type license.

  • R-39 covers residential air conditioning and refrigeration, including repair.
  • R-39R is residential. It covers installation, alteration and repair of residential AC and refrigeration systems.[1]
  • CR-39 is the dual license covering both C-39 and R-39R scopes.
  • C-39 and C-58 are commercial classes, not what a house needs.

What a license does and doesn't prove

A license is not proof of insurance. The ROC requires workers' compensation but no other insurance, so ask for proof of coverage.

Questions to ask before you hire

Tick them off as you go. Nothing is saved or sent.

Licensing does carry a surety bond or cash deposit. The Residential Contractors' Recovery Fund exists for eligible homeowners after a final order.

Can you hire someone unlicensed?

Unlicensed work is exempt only if the whole job falls under the statutory dollar limit, is casual or minor, needs no local permit and doesn't connect to a fuel supply. Most AC repairs won't qualify.

Before you call, read how to verify an HVAC contractor's license and questions to ask before hiring.

Questions Valley homeowners ask

No single AC unit is best for every home. The right choice depends on your home size, ductwork, budget, and efficiency goals. For Phoenix homes, look for a unit that meets the Southwest regional efficiency minimum of 14.3 SEER2 and ideally exceeds it. Many local contractors carry the brands below, and a licensed installer can match the right model to your load calculation.

Brand Typical SEER2 Range Strengths Typical Installed Cost
Trane Varies by model Durability, strong warranties, quiet operation Get a local quote
Carrier Varies by model Wide model range, good dealer network Get a local quote
Lennox Varies by model High efficiency, premium features Get a local quote
Rheem Varies by model Strong value, good reliability Get a local quote
Daikin Varies by model Quality heat pumps and ductless options Get a local quote
Goodman Varies by model Budget-friendly, widely available parts Get a local quote
