Common problems

Signs Your Phoenix AC Needs a Tune-Up

An AC tune-up is a seasonal inspection, cleaning and adjustment visit. A technician checks, cleans and tests your system so small problems get caught before they become breakdowns.

In Phoenix, that matters more than in most places. The city logged 113 straight days at or above 100°F in 2024, beating the 76-day record set in 1993. With summer highs averaging about 106°F, your system can run for months with little rest.

Common warning signs:

  • Weak airflow or rooms that cool unevenly
  • Longer run times than you remember
  • Energy bills climbing with no change in habits
  • Odd noises or smells when the system starts

Check the filter first. A clogged or wrong filter can restrict airflow, and our filter guide for Phoenix homes covers it.

How serious is it

  1. Level 1 of 3: Early

Signs Uneven cooling or longer run times

What to do Check the filter and book a tune-up

  2. Level 2 of 3: Growing

Signs Rising bills or odd noises and smells at startup

What to do Book a tune-up before the May–June rush

  3. Level 3 of 3: Failing

Signs The system has stopped cooling

What to do Call for a repair, not a tune-up

Sound familiar? Your AC runs all afternoon in Mesa and the upstairs still sits warm. You nudge the thermostat down. The bill rises, and the system keeps working harder.

If the system has already stopped cooling or is failing, the visit is a repair, not a tune-up.

Waiting on a weak system usually means a bigger repair bill later, often during peak demand when scheduling is hardest. Book before the May–June rush. Winter is the easiest time to get on a calendar.

What it costs

What Affects AC Tune-Up Cost in Phoenix

Price depends on how many systems you have, their age and condition, what the visit covers, and whether you buy one visit or a plan.

Price factors

What moves the price

  • Number of systems

Each unit you have serviced adds to the visit

  • Age and condition

Older or worn systems can need more than a basic check

  • What the visit covers

A very low price may cover only a basic check

  • One visit or a plan

Maintenance plans are priced monthly or annually

Phoenix-area HVAC companies' own websites, checked October 2026, give a picture of advertised prices:

Item What companies list
Tune-up (most list) $49.95 to $89
Tune-up (full spread) $17.75 to $149
Tune-up (middle value) $59
Diagnostic / service-call fee (most list) $89 to $99
Maintenance plans, monthly $10 per month to $30 per month
Maintenance plans, annual $99 per year to $399 per year
Repair after the inspection Depends on the job; get an itemized written quote

Many tune-up prices are seasonal specials, and some are "starting at" figures. A very low price may cover only a basic check, so compare what each visit includes, not just the number.

Pro tip

Ask each company to list exactly what its tune-up covers, so you compare the same visit and not just the lowest number.

Some listings say the diagnostic fee is waived or credited if you approve the repair.

Free inspections

Be careful with a free inspection. It can be a sales visit, so ask what the visit includes and what happens if the technician finds a problem.

A cheap price also doesn't make an unlicensed operator acceptable. Ask for the license number before anyone touches your system.

Our AC repair cost guide explains what drives the bill once a repair enters the picture.

What to expect

How an AC Tune-Up Works, Step by Step

Expect a visit of roughly one visit's worth of work, not a rebuild. A typical sequence:

Step by step

How a tune-up visit runs

  1. Booking and system check

You confirm the system type and symptoms, and the technician checks how it runs.

  2. Inspect and clean

Filter, coils, electrical connections, refrigerant levels and condensate drain are covered.

  3. Test operation and airflow

The system is run to confirm it cools and moves air properly.

  4. Written findings

You get a clear list of what was done and what needs attention.

  1. Booking and system check. You confirm the system type and any symptoms. The technician checks how it runs on arrival.
  2. Inspect and clean components. This usually covers the filter, coils, electrical connections, refrigerant levels and the condensate drain.
  3. Test operation and airflow. The technician runs the system and checks that it cools and moves air properly.
  4. Written findings and recommendations. You get a clear list of what was done and what needs attention.

Phoenix's 2024 mechanical code amendments, effective August 1, 2025, prohibit nonmetallic condensate piping in direct sunlight, such as on roofs, because heat softens it. That is a rule for installs and replacements.

It is still a good reason to ask your technician to look at rooftop drain lines.

Tune-up vs. repair

Ask these questions before any repair work begins: "Is this part of the tune-up price or a separate repair? Get the quote in writing before work starts."

Decide on repair or replacement only after the inspection. Our repair-or-replace guide helps with that choice.

Maintenance plans vs one-off visits

Plan terms vary by company. Compare visits per year, priority scheduling, what each visit includes, and cancellation and renewal terms. Our maintenance plans guide goes deeper.

One note: if you run an evaporative (swamp) cooler, an AC tune-up doesn't cover it. Those need their own annual pad and pump service.

Choosing a company

How to Verify an Arizona ROC License and Choose a Pro

Start with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. Its "Before You Hire a Contractor" page at roc.az.gov/before-hire walks through the Contractor Search.

  1. Look up the contractor's record and confirm the license is active.
  2. Check the class. HVAC work falls under R-39, R-39R or CR-39; C-39 and C-58 are commercial classes. The class must cover the work in your contract. See the ROC license classifications.
  3. Call the phone number on the ROC record, not one from an ad.
  4. Ask for proof of coverage. A license requires workers' compensation but no other insurance, so ask for proof of liability too and call the insurer to confirm.
  5. Get a written contract with the license number and start and completion dates. Make checks payable to the company named in it.

"Licensed, bonded and insured" in an ad is not always true.

If a tune-up "special" is sold at your door, the contract needs a Notice of Cancellation. You can cancel through midnight of the third business day.

Credentials worth asking about

  • NATE certifies individual technicians (verify at natex.org).
  • ACCA Quality Assured accredits companies.
  • EPA Section 608 is required for anyone handling refrigerants.
  • A manufacturer dealer badge is a brand program, not a license.

Our credentials guide explains each one.
