A New AC Built for 113-Degree Days

Phoenix cooling runs for months, and a poorly matched system pays for it every summer. Replacement done right starts with a calculation, not a guess.

  • Sized by load calculation, not habit
  • Permit and license checked before you sign
  • Written contract with real dates

01

Common problems

Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Phoenix AC

Phoenix logged 113 straight days at or above 100 degrees in 2024. Equipment in Phoenix, Mesa and Gilbert works hard for months, so wear shows up in plain ways.

  • Repeat breakdowns, one repair after another
  • Weak cooling on the hottest afternoons
  • Bills climbing with no change in how you use the AC
  • Rooms that never match the thermostat
  • New grinding, rattling or humming

Waiting costs more over time. Repairs stack up and bills keep rising. Then a failure in peak heat leaves you choosing equipment in a hurry.

Sound familiar? Your AC needed a repair last summer. You paid for it. This summer it needed another, and the house still sits warm by 4 p.m.

Repair or replace?

Age and refrigerant type both shape the decision. Our guide on repairing or replacing your AC in Phoenix walks through how to weigh them.

For newer refrigerant, see R-454B explained.

What it costs

What AC Replacement Costs in Phoenix: Summary

Price is driven by equipment, tonnage, ductwork condition, permit and labor. Larger systems and damaged ducts push the total up. For the full breakdown, read what AC replacement costs in Phoenix, and see the tonnage and pricing guide for sizing-related differences.

Price factors

What moves the price

  • Equipment

The unit you choose sets the base price

  • Tonnage

    Larger systems cost more

  • Ductwork condition

Damaged ducts push the total up

  • Permit

Listed as its own line on an itemized quote

  • Labor

Installation labor adds to the equipment cost

The figures below come from Phoenix-area HVAC companies' own websites, checked October 2026. "Entry price" means a starting figure, not a typical total.

Job Price printed on company sites
Complete HVAC system $1,999 (entry price)
AC installation From $4500 (entry price)
Standard central AC replacement $7,000 to $12,000
Heat pump replacement $6,000 to $12,000
Ductwork repairs or changes Depends on the job

For a national point of comparison, Angi puts the average cost to install a new AC unit between $3,900 and $8,000, with labor around $1,500 alone.[1] Phoenix prices run differently, so use that as context only.

Pro tip

Ask each company to price the same scope, with equipment, labor, permit and duct work listed separately, so the quotes compare fairly.

What to expect

The Replacement Process, Step by Step

Most jobs in Scottsdale, Chandler or Tempe follow the same path.

Step by step

The replacement at a glance

  1. Assessment

An in-home visit and load calculation size the system.

  2. Quote

Equipment, labor, ducts and permit are itemized.

  3. Contract

License number and start and completion dates are listed.

  4. Permit check

Confirm who pulls the permit for your city.

  5. Removal

The old system comes out and refrigerant is handled properly.

  6. Installation

The new system goes in with condensate piping suited to the heat.

  7. Startup test

The system must hold set indoor temperatures.

  8. Walkthrough

Thermostat, filter and warranty paperwork are reviewed.

  1. In-home assessment and load calculation. Sizing is calculated, not guessed, and oversizing is a real risk. See the tonnage guide.
  2. Written quote. Equipment, labor, ducts and permit itemized.
  3. Contract. It should carry the license number and start and completion dates.
  4. Permit check. Rules differ by city, so confirm who pulls it.
  5. Removal. The old system comes out and refrigerant is handled properly.
  6. Installation. Rooftop condensate piping must suit the heat. Phoenix amendments bar nonmetallic piping in direct sun.
  7. Startup test. Phoenix code requires systems able to hold set indoor temperatures.
  8. Walkthrough. Thermostat, filter, warranty paperwork.

Spring, before the May-June rush, tends to be easier for scheduling than mid-summer.

Choosing a company

How to Verify an Arizona ROC License

Arizona's Registrar of Contractors licenses HVAC contractors. Cities handle permits, not trade licenses. See Arizona ROC HVAC license basics.

HVAC work needs an R-39, R-39R or CR-39 type license. C-39 and C-58 are commercial classes.

Before you sign:

  • Search the ROC Contractor Search at roc.az.gov
  • Confirm the license is active and its class covers your contract
  • Make checks payable to the company named on the license
  • Ask for proof of insurance, since a license does not prove coverage beyond workers' compensation
  • Ask which permit rule applies in Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale; see the permit guide
  • Check rebate steps before installing: SRP and APS

Optional credentials include NATE, ACCA and EPA 608; see what they mean.

Red flags: no license number on the quote, pressure to sign the same day, or a vague "we'll figure out the size."

Questions Valley homeowners ask

Installing a new central air conditioning system in a Phoenix-area home depends on system size and efficiency, and larger homes or high-efficiency units cost more. Get a written quote from a licensed contractor. Costs depend on system size, SEER2 rating, ductwork condition, and whether a new air handler or furnace is needed. SRP and APS rebates can reduce the final cost for qualifying high-efficiency equipment.
